A century of colour in cast iron
Le Creuset’s first enameled cast iron cocotte was cast in 1925 in a Flame-coloured glaze. A hundred years on, the pieces are still cast in the same northern-French foundry.

The story
Two Belgian industrialists, one French foundry
Le Creuset was founded in 1925 in Fresnoy-le-Grand, France, by Armand Desaegher, a casting specialist, and Octave Aubecq, an enamelling specialist. Their first cocotte was finished in “Volcanique”, the colour now known as Flame.
The name means “crucible” in French. In 1958 the company introduced the Coquelle, designed by Raymond Loewy, and its cookware is still cast in the original foundry.
