What is a Sauteuse?

What is a Sauteuse?

Le Creuset’s Signature Sauteuse is the perfect size and shape for sauces, stews, side dishes, shallow frying, one pot meals and more. It’s crafted from our legendary enameled cast iron for superior results every time. A cross between a deep sauté pan, fry pan and a Dutch Oven, the curved base and lower sides make it ideal for whisking sauces, tossing stir-fries, stirring creamy risottos, and serving bubbling casseroles from stove to oven to table.

Sauteuse vs. Dutch Oven vs. Sauté Pan

The shape of the Le Creuset Sauteuse is similar to both our iconic Dutch Oven but also a sauté pan. The larger 3.5 qt. capacity accommodates more food than a fry pan, while the sloped shape is more versatile than a sauté pan. It is deeper than a sauté pan, but not quite as deep as a Dutch Oven.

Similar to a sauté pan, the curved, wide base provides plenty of room for browning meats and vegetables on the stovetop before slow braising or roasting in the oven. The larger surface area design is also helpful when simmering and reducing liquids. Whereas a Dutch Oven and sauté pan both have straight sides, the Sauteuse has sloped sides and rounded base to make it easy to get into the corners of the pot with a spatula or whisk. This is especially helpful when making sauces or continuously stirring dishes like risotto.

Just like our popular Dutch Ovens, the Sauteuse is crafted from our legendary enameled cast iron for exceptional heat distribution and retention qualities that lock in flavor. The colorful enameled surface minimizes sticking and staining, requires no pre-seasoning, and is easy-to-clean. It comes with a tight-fitting lid with our signature stainless steel knob for braising and baking, or use it without the lid as a small roasting pan or for side dishes and reheating leftovers.

What Can I Cook in a Sauteuse?

Wondering what you can make in the Le Creuset Signature Sauteuse? The 3.5 qt size is perfect for 3-4 people for main dishes and one pot meals. For casseroles, salads, sides and dessert it will easily serve 4-6.

Try using it for searing pork chops and chicken, and serve with a pan gravy. The sloped sides are ideal for making a rich roux for gumbo or béchamel sauce for mac and cheese, and also for constant stirring when making polenta and risotto. With ample depth, the Signature Sauteuse can be used to make chili, soups and noodle dishes like Pan-Fried Noodles and Shrimp as well.

But don’t forget about dessert and bread too - cobblers, fruit crisps, cinnamon rolls and brownies all turn out beautifully when baked in the Signature Sauteuse. Simply bring the pot directly from the oven to the table for attractive and easy serving.
